Fed: Four deaths make holiday road toll among recent worst

Four deaths in two states have given Australia one of its worst holiday road tolls
of recent years.

With two days still remaining in the Christmas-New Year toll period, three deaths in
Victoria and one in Queensland have pushed the number of fatalities to 73, surpassing
last year's 71.

A higher number of deaths has been recorded only three times since 1996-97 -- 80 in
1997-98 and again in 2000-2001, and 77 in 1998-99.

Two paramedics and a local shire councillor were killed in separate accidents in rural
Victoria today, …
