MEMORANDUM ON NURSING HOME PROFITS MISREPRESENTED ISSUES.(Main)

On behalf of counties statewide, I am compelled to respond to the recent barrage of press resulting from the Times Union's Oct. 7 lead story "Nursing home profits soar," as well as the subsequent political cartoon Oct. 20, suggesting that Medicaid is a lucrative source of nursing home revenue. The internal memorandum leaked by the State Health Department indicates that publicly operated nursing homes earned a "profit" of $1.8 million in 1991 after a loss of $15.7 million in 1990. In addition, the memorandum purports that the public nursing homes received non-operating revenues of $66.7 million in 1990 and $68.1 million in 1991.
